Road Trips
Personally, I’d go for the road trip with a partner or friends, taking in the contrasting cultures as you pass through different western states. There’s a coastal route, where you can stop at the beaches of Lincoln City, Crescent City and Coos Bay, finally heading south through San Francisco and California.
Mountain Route
For a more scenic experience, take the mountain route, passing through Portland and Oregon, which takes you up the hills of Northern California – a scenic drive where you can also stop at Reno, Nevada and Lake Tahoe.
On the way, make the most of Lake Shasta and Castle Crags State Park, situated north of Redding, California. Between Seattle and Las Vegas are many national parks, perfect if you are travelling with family. Head south to Mount Rainier and then visit Crater Lake in Oregon. One fantastic stop on the way is the giant Redwoods in California.
The fastest route is obviously the highway, but this defeats the purpose of driving as you may as well take a flight if time is your first consideration. Depending on how many excursions you take on the road, it may take as long as 2-3 days, but if you plan it right, this in itself is a holiday before the main event.
Hit the Casinos of Las Vegas
If the glitz and glam are too much of a temptation and you can’t wait to hit the casinos, a flight will only take you just over 2 hours. Flights are reasonably priced, starting at around $220, which is probably not much more – if not very close to – how much you’ll spend on fuel if you drive.
Plane
Hop aboard a plane at Sea-Tac International airport and sit back with a few drinks, content in the knowledge you’ll be arriving at McCarran airport, where you’ll be sipping cocktails in a Las Vegas lounge in a little over 3 hours.
Train Take the Strain
Catching a train is a third option, but there isn’t a direct route from Seattle to Las Vegas, so you’d have to change at Portland and then Los Angeles, a journey that takes 35 hours.
There’s also the bus option, but considering fares cost a little less than flights, this seems pointless as the journey takes 36 hours and doesn’t offer the same freedom to roam as driving.
